This comes in useful especially when trying to make a series of jump with the grappling hook. Shadwen is not a very good experience on the whole, because it is what most games these days are or are reduced to, which is usually a good concept with mediocre gameplay on top of an on-the-nose-half-hearted-narrative. A mish-mash of ideas makes for a special stealth game. Assisting this is how time stops when you stop moving - even in mid-air the action will stop enabling you to plan and execute your next move. There’s no explanation as to how you can do this but it makes the hardcore stealth element less irritating and places the focus on puzzle solving. One of the great features of Shadwen is that this failure state can be literally reversed by winding back time.

If a guard sees you for longer than a few seconds then it’s game over and any discovered guard will lead to these grown men, with weapons, to run around like headless chickens and ring their bell signalling game over as well. As you work your way through the games 15 levels, Lily will tag along with you as you guide her through the guard-ridden. Shadwen attempts to mesh the genres of stealth-action and puzzle games in order to create a unique experience in an original medieval world, but its time-control mechanics have little purpose other than to conceal the broken AI and the tedious gameplay.

So you’ve the complete stealth option or the murdering option (or a mix) - both of which require you to be out of sight all the time. Shadwen follows the tale of the titular character Shadwen as she embarks on an assassination mission against the King, with an unlikely companion in the form of Lily, a young orphaned girl whom Shadwen rescues from a guard. Despite wanting to come along with you Lily is disgusted by such violent actions which has a bearing on the story later on. Distracting guards by pulling down crates or boxes or by stabbing them in the back. As you’ve now, oddly, taken a young girl under your grumpy wing the game consists of escorting Lily through the levels without being seen.
